Thousands to Be Laid Off in NHS: Government Approves Cost-Saving Plan

The healthcare service in the UK is being restructured. Following an agreement with the Treasury, the layoff of thousands of staff within the NHS (National Health Service) has been approved. This decision came after the institution was permitted to make extra expenditures to cover its year-end budget deficit.

The government announced that 18,000 administrative and managerial positions will be eliminated, a step expected to save billions of pounds in the long term. Health Secretary Wes Streeting stated, "By reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, we will redirect resources to frontline healthcare services. This process won't be completed overnight, but the NHS will get back on its feet."

However, unions argue that this decision will jeopardize the quality of patient care. Patricia Marquis, a representative of the Royal College of Nursing, warned, "Laying off thousands of experts will create a significant gap on the ground. This undermines both healthcare services and public health."

It was announced that for every £1 billion saved under the reform, additional funding would be created for 116,000 hip and knee surgeries.
