New UK visa rules raise English requirement to B2 level

Prospective migrants and employers are being reminded that the clock is ticking on a major change to UK immigration policy. From tomorrow, Thursday, January 8, 2026, the English language proficiency requirement for key work-related visas will jump from level B1 (intermediate) to B2 (upper-intermediate).

The Home Office announced these changes as part of a broader strategy to ensure that those arriving in the UK can integrate more effectively and contribute immediately to the workforce. This shift marks the most significant increase in language standards for economic migration routes in over a decade.

Which visa routes are affected?

The new B2 requirement—often described as equivalent to an A-level standard—applies specifically to first-time applicants in the following categories:

  • Skilled Worker Visa

  • High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa

  • Scale-up Worker Visa

For the Turkish community across London, particularly in boroughs like Enfield and Hackney where business sponsorship is common, this change means that new hires from abroad must demonstrate a higher level of fluency. To meet the B2 standard, applicants must prove they can understand complex texts and interact with native speakers with spontaneity across all four core skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Important protections for current visa holders

There is some relief for those already living and working in the UK. The government has confirmed that individuals who are already on these visa routes will not be required to meet the higher B2 standard when they apply to extend their stay, provided they remain on the same route. They can continue to rely on the B1 level they proved during their initial application.

However, anyone switching into these categories from another visa type (such as a Graduate or Student visa) on or after January 8 will be subject to the new, tougher rules.

Advice for applicants in London

Immigration experts in Haringey and Islington are urging anyone who has already booked a B1-level test for a new application to check if they can still submit their visa filing before the midnight deadline. If the application is submitted after tomorrow, a B1 test result will likely lead to a refusal.

To meet the B2 standard through a Secure English Language Test (SELT), applicants generally need to achieve an IELTS score of at least 5.5 in all components. Those who hold a degree taught in English or are nationals of majority English-speaking countries remain exempt from the test.
