Major tax hikes for 2026: Departure fees and communication taxes set to rise
As the new year approaches, the Turkish Ministry of Treasury and Finance has officially announced significant increases in various taxes and fees, according to the latest issue of the Official Gazette. These changes, effective from January 1, 2026, will impact international travelers and residents both in Turkey and abroad.
Significant increase in departure fees
One of the most notable changes for the Turkish community in London—particularly those in Enfield and Haringey who frequently travel back to their homeland—is the hike in the Overseas Departure Fee (Yurt Dışı Çıkış Harcı). The fee is set to rise from 710 TL to 1,250 TL. This adjustment is part of a broader fiscal strategy to align fees with the current economic climate.
Rising communication and fuel costs
In addition to travel costs, the Special Communication Tax (Özel İletişim Vergisi) has been increased by the 2025 revaluation rate of 25.49%, bringing the new total to 700 TL. This will affect mobile phone and internet services, a vital link for families in Hackney and Islington who maintain close contact with relatives in Turkey.
Furthermore, fuel costs are also seeing an upward trend. The fixed Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) on petrol and diesel has increased by 6.95%. This results in a price rise of approximately 1.16 TL per liter for petrol and 1.08 TL per liter for diesel.
