Thousands of people across the UK facing debt, unemployment, housing eviction, or family law disputes will soon have access to expanded free legal support. The Ministry of Justice has unveiled a new £20 million investment as part of the government’s "Plan for Change" program, designed to ensure that justice is accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.
The new grant program is set to run from October 2026 until March 2029, focusing on providing early-stage advice. By intervening before cases reach the courtroom, the government hopes to help individuals resolve life-altering issues—such as bankruptcy or custody battles—without the stress and high costs of formal litigation.
The funding will be managed by the Access to Justice Foundation, which will distribute grants to organizations that provide frontline legal advice. This is particularly significant for residents in Hackney and Haringey, where community support centers often serve as a lifeline for those navigating complex legal systems.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy emphasized the importance of this support, stating that being able to access help during life’s most difficult moments is "vital." He noted that this investment would bolster the sustainability of legal services that help the most vulnerable members of society find a stable footing.
To ensure there is no gap in service while the new program is being established, the government has also extended current legal support grants until September 2026. This move provides much-needed certainty for advice centers in Enfield and Islington that are currently helping residents manage the rising cost of living and housing challenges.
By focusing on early intervention, the initiative aims to reduce the long-term mental health impact of debt and legal uncertainty, helping families across London build a more secure future.
