A significant technological shift is reaching its final stage this month, with millions of "vintage" mobile devices across the UK set to lose their mobile data connections. While the 3G phase-out has been ongoing for over two years, the final major network, Virgin Media O2, is officially switching off its remaining 3G masts throughout early 2026.
For the Turkish community in London, especially the older generation who may still rely on classic handsets like the iPhone 4 or early Samsung Galaxy models, this "Eski Telefon" (Old Phone) warning is a call to action to avoid being cut off from the digital world.
Most of the UK’s major networks have already completed their 3G shutdowns. If you are on one of these networks, your 3G service has already vanished:
EE & Vodafone: Shutdown completed in February 2024.
Three: Shutdown completed in December 2024. (Note: Three has no 2G network, so 3G-only phones on Three stopped working for calls and texts entirely).
Virgin Media O2: The final phase began in late 2025 and is being completed this month. This affects not just O2 customers, but also those on "piggyback" networks like Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile, and LycaMobile.
If you have a phone that does not support 4G or 5G:
Internet Access: You will no longer be able to use mobile data. This means no WhatsApp (unless on Wi-Fi), no Google Maps, and no social media while you are out in boroughs like Enfield or Haringey.
Calls and Texts: On O2, Vodafone, and EE, your phone will automatically switch to the older 2G network. While this allows for basic calls and texts, the voice quality will be significantly lower, and the 2G network itself is scheduled for retirement by 2033.
Emergency Alarms: Some older home security systems and personal "care alarms" used by elderly residents also rely on 3G modules and may stop working.
According to the regulator Ofcom, roughly 2 million devices in the UK still rely on these legacy networks. To see if your phone is safe:
Check the screen: Look at the signal bar at the top of your phone. If you ever see "4G," "LTE," or "5G," your device is compatible.
Check settings: Go to Settings > Mobile Networks. If "4G" or "LTE" is not an option, your phone is likely 3G-only.
Identify the model: Generally, the iPhone 4S and older, or Samsung Galaxy S2 and older, are 3G-only and will need to be replaced.
Mobile operators are "refarming" the radio frequencies used by 3G to boost the capacity and speed of 5G networks, which are set for a major nationwide expansion in April 2026. Interestingly, a similar process is underway in Turkey, where the BTK has announced that 3G networks will be phased out by 2029 to make room for 5G.
If you have relatives in Hackney or Islington who still use an old "button phone" or an early smartphone, now is the time to help them upgrade to a basic 4G-enabled device to ensure they stay connected to family here and back home.
